Social Studies Project

Due: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 (may be submitted earlier)

Our classes have been studying early California history in Social Studies - Native Americans, early exploration, Spanish control and the missions, the rancho period, the Gold Rush, etc.

As a class project - either as individuals or in small groups, the students have been assigned to build or make replicas or models of some aspect of early California history.

Some examples are:

• a California Indian dwelling
• a mission
• a presidio or rancho
• a relief map of the missions
• a covered wagon
• ship that came around the Horn
• Gold Rush camp scene
• equipment used for mining, such as a cradle
• early CA flags,
• etc., etc., etc. ...

The students are also assigned to write a short report (about one page) about how their projects fits into California history, as well as a description about how they made it.

Materials to use may be of the students' choosing.  Cardboard, hard paper or clay dough have been used successfully on previous projects.  A sturdy base ( one that get through the door) is needed for a large project.

Students will be graded on:

• Authenticity
• Artistic Creativity and Neatness
• Completion of Project on Time
• Short Report on Project

( Use an index card to identify the project and the creators)

The Social Studies project will be DUE by Tuesday, May 17, but may be turned in before.  This will be in time for Open House display.
