Parent Letters: September 2, 2004, Parent Letter
September 2, 2004
Dear Parents,
Hello! We have survived the first week of school! I hope that your child has enjoyed the first week as much as I have. While I will not be writing a parent letter each week, I will send one home whenever I have important announcements or information.
Math QuizzesRather than grading individual classwork and homework assignments, periodically, I will be giving the class a graded “pop-quiz” on their classwork and homework assignments. These quizzes will be open-notes. What this means is that students may use all their hand-written notes, classwork assignments, and homework assignments to successfully complete the quiz. I will randomly select 8 problems from the various assignments for the quiz problems.
In order to receive credit for a correct quiz answer, the student must fulfill all three aspects of the problem (see below). Each assignment should include the date and assignment in the heading section to facilitate the “finding” of the appropriate assignments.
To prepare for the quizzes, students are asked to do three elements for every problem:
Please take a few minutes to verify that your child has completed all three required elements for each problem.
After correcting the assignments at the beginning of each math session, students should make any necessary corrections to the assignment and fill-in any missing or forgotten elements.
Sample:
Math Classwork: 1-2 p. 7 #9-32 |

Please help your children have all their book covers by next week. You do not need to purchase book socks. Instead, you can use old paper bags as book covers.
1-Liter Bottles for Science
To help with our Earth Materials science unit, please send your child to school with at least one empty 1-Liter clear bottle with lid. The best type of bottle is that used for mineral water because it does not have rings along the bottom portion of the bottle.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email (Young_Kathy@cupertino.k12.ca.us) or phone (408-257-9282, ext 208). Our class website has interesting and useful information posted – check us out online at: http://missyoung.justmoi.org. I hope to see you at Back-To-School Night on Thursday, September 9, 2004 – the upper grades will be meeting during the 2 nd part of the night (after the principal’s message). Have a great long weekend!
Sincerely,
Kathy Young
